Hi! My name is Lisa Matthes, and I am a Certified Nurse Midwife. I finished my midwifery education in 2008 through Stony Brook University, a distance learning program located in New York. I had some fabulous local preceptors, and also traveled to Nebraska and Arizona to complete my training. Before I became a midwife, I was an RN for 11 years and spent most of my career in critical care, working in the ICU. This background has enhanced my midwifery practice in that I feel very comfortable in my ability to recognize and treat any sort of emergency that may arise. Fortunately, this does not happen often!
I believe that birth is a beautiful, natural, NORMAL life process. I believe homebirth is as safe, if not safer than hospital birth. I believe moms are powerful and posess the ability to give birth without drugs and intervention. I believe birth can be empowering and transformative. I belive each mom deserves individual care, with special attention given to her unique desires.
